Das Grafikformat DDS (engl.: Direct Draw Surface) wurde im Rahmen der damaligen DirectX Schnittstelle des Windows entwickelt.
GIMP und auch Photoshop, unterstützen dieses Format ausschließlich über ein separates Plugin. DDS-Dateien werden vorwiegend im Bereich der Computerspiele zur Speicherung von Texturen oder RaumTexturen (engl.: Volume Textures) verwendet.
